Fringe review – Garry Starr Performs Everything

‘Garry Starr Performs Everything’ is a comic journey into the world of theatre. The anti-hero of the story is Garry, an actor rejected by the Royal Shakespeare Company who sets out to prove the critics wrong by performing every type of theatre in only one hour.

It’s an ambitious task, but Garry’s the man for the job. In his white tights and ruffled Shakespearean collar, he bursts onto the stage in an enthusiastic dance number, then takes us through genres such as dance, slapstick, and music with lots of madcap humour and laugh-out-loud moments. Although this is a one-man show, there’s plenty of audience participation and people have a good time getting involved in scenes from a melodrama, farce or modern Shakespeare play. Garry also does some seductive fettuccine eating with several audience members in his portrayal of the romantic comedy genre.

Damien Warren-Smith plays the title role, and his talent for physical comedy is showcased throughout the play, from nipple tassel twirling in his tribute to burlesque to his hilarious version of contemporary dance (in a G-string).

This is what the Fringe is all about, discovering a gem of a show, full of fun, fettuccine and frivolity. Check it out and have a good laugh.

On from Feb 27 to 2 March at The Producers.
