From the first moment time I saw Edward Scissorhands at the movies, I was spellbound by the enchanting composition of the soundtrack. Who was this man who could take you from sinister and ghoulish to humorous and fun and seamlessly on to dangerous and exhilarating? The genius that is Danny Elfman of course! And last night Adeladians had the chance to see him live.

The concert takes you on a journey of 25 years of cinematic collaboration between Burton and Elfman who together form the perfectly macabre symbiotic relationship. Together they harness sugar sweet dreams and twisted dark nightmares to bring this magic to the big screen that is now considered part of cinematic history. From their very first project, Pee Wee’s big Adventure (1985) right through to Burton’s latest work, Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie (2012), this night was truly a celebration of an extraordinary friendship.

Conducted by John Mauceri, world-renowned conductor, The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra captures Elfman’s divergent sounds and melancholic splendour of his rich portfolio of work for Burton’s films.

Every single moment was perfectly executed, with cheers of delight as the iconic film moments were displayed evoking memories of his work, including Beetlejuice and of course the roaring anthem, Batman Returns.

The guest violinist Sandy Cameron lit the stage with her swivelling hips and fiddling but

what really made the evening was, of course the special guest, none other than Danny Elfman himself, who commanded the stage with his uninhibited and his animated presence, a treat for us all as he embodied The Pumpkin King from the Nightmare before Christmas.

It was yet another a truly delightful and inspiring Adelaide evening…
