Australia’s own RnB Soul artist, Prinnie Stevens, will wow Adelaide Fringe Festival audiences with the world premiere of Lady Sings the Blues. A thoughtful cabaret, telling a story of empowerment through the songs and journeys of women of colour, all of whom are long admired by the artist.
Prinnie co-wrote and produced the show, and its debut performance at Adelaide Fringe 2021 for four nights only at the Queens theatre is set to be quite the intimate event.
“I can’t wait to hit the stage with my all-female band and share all my favourite music from the greats like Billie (Holiday) to modern-day queens such as Beyonce,” says Prinnie.
“I have created a vintage feel with a modern twist. Think Great Gatsby meets Michael Jackson vibes with the essence of Etta James blues & Beyonce’s Soul Pop… Not only inspired musically but also through fashion, the elegant use of gowns and even the significance of the gardenias use in Billie’s Holidays story play a significant role throughout.”
“I have a special connection with Adelaide, previously having the privilege of working with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and several Musicals like “THRILLER” Live. But this will be my very first Adelaide Fringe Festival, and I’m so excited about premiering this show for Adelaide!”
Lady Sings the Blues is a raw account of female hurt, struggles and pain, transporting crowds from a speakeasy setting to the very heart of Prinnie herself.
Prinnie says being intensely involved in the creative process of the one-hour show was an intense and moving experience.
“This show will take you deep into the stories and songs of the women who sang them, and how their struggles and pains have paved the way for each singer succeeding them. From the 20s to the present day, it’s all about women empowerment through music,“ says Prinnie.
Her musical theatre, TV and stage backgrounds all came together in creating the return to her first love of cabaret. Prinnie has shared the stage with prominent women of colour across the globe for more than two decades. The likes of Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle and Mary J Blige in the United States and Australian Women like Jessica Mauboy, Christine Anu and Marcia Hines.
Participating on season one of The Voice Australia has led to a successful career in theatre which continues alongside shows from Prinnie Stevens Productions.
Lady Sings the Blues has four shows from March 4-7 at new Adelaide Fringe Festival venue, The Queens, which is Australia’s oldest standing theatre.
