Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster is an epic performance of raw and pure talent from a group of incredible young, British performers. Through their incredible skills in beatboxing and rapping, as well as their strong stage presence, the members of BAC Beatbox Academy bring Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ into the modern era by exploring themes relevant to modern society whilst still maintaining the implications of the classic text.

Presented by the Royal Croquet Club and BAC Beatbox Academy, Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster is one of the most highly praised performances of the 2020 Adelaide Fringe Festival. The performance explores the topics of alienation, body dysmorphia, and social media angst in a way which asks – are monsters born? Or are they made?

Everything that you hear during the performance is a capella, and it’s phenomenal to think people can make these sounds. You witness not only beautiful singing voices and epic beats, but sounds of  crickets, rain, and traffic. The simple stage setting allows the performers talent to truly shine. The way they move their bodies is incredible, and the simple lighting cues draw your attention to the details of the performance.

The audience is included and asked to participate in many aspects of the performance. BAC Beatbox Academy’s co-director Conrad Murray introduces the audience to the world of beatboxing with a quick beginners lesson in the skill. During one of the songs, random members of the audience are singled out with a high beam light which forces them to truly understand the impact of modern bullying. Finally, the audience is recruited to judge an impromptu beatboxing challenge which showcases the phenomenal skills of the cast. 

Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster is a must-see performance of the 2020 Adelaide Fringe.
