The Best of Adelaide Fringe: The Late Show is hosted in The Balcony Room at The Griffins Hotel every Friday and Saturday, where they choose the best of the Adelaide Fringe’s visiting international comedians, alongside the creme-de-la-creme of Australian comedy, for 90 minutes of fun, laughs and the unexpected.
The Balcony Room was full to the brim of people eager to get a small taste of what a group of Fringe comedians have to offer, and everyone was buzzing with excitable energy. Host, Jez Watts, had the incredibly difficult job of feeling out what the audiences were expecting from the night ahead. He made a variety of jokes and anecdotes and honed in on what made everybody laugh, and what flopped. His enthusiastic energy revved up the crowd and got the night going at full pace!
The first comedian was Kelsey De Almeida, a 23 year old stand-up comedian from London. The audience was charmed by Kelsey’s British wit and posh demeanour as he told anecdotes about the girlfriend he most recently broke up with. His self-deprecating humour made everybody laugh as he admitted to being the ‘gay family member’ at family gatherings – even though he isn’t gay.
Adelaide homeboy, Thomas Green, stole the audiences attention with his boisterous personality, hilarious accents, and terrifyingly funny imitations. Currently living and performing in the United Kingdom, Thomas made brilliantly funny comparisons between British and Australian life. He also told hilarious anecdotes about his personal life with stories from when he was a primary school teacher, to jokes about his girlfriends habits.
Vladimir McTavish had everybody laughing before he had even opened his mouth, because his new haircut is anything but attractive. He used this to his advantage though, starting the laughs by explaining that his hairdresser had a duty of care to make sure he didn’t look ridiculous, and yet he does. This experienced comedian is always a laugh, with his charismatic personality, shameless demeanour, and brilliant skills in stand-up comedy.
WeeStu Campbell is a Fringe Virgin, and at 59 years old, he decided that it’s time for him to start his career in stand-up comedy. He performed a short act at tonight’s show, and gave us a taste of what he has been working on. He has the charisma to become a great comedian, and with a little practice and planning he is sure to succeed.
The final comedian of the night was Nik Coppin, who not only showcased a selection of his hilarious jokes, accents, and anecdotes, but interacted with the audience and laughed his own head off at the responses he received. His natural stage presence and the way he can laugh at his own jokes is what makes him a loveable comedian and truly talented performer.
The Best of Adelaide Fringe: The Late Show is the perfect way to end a night at the Fringe, or start a night on the town. The comedians are sure to have you in stitches, and the pub’s bar is open all night long. So be sure to grab some friends, have a drink, and make the most of this awesome event!
