Velvet Underground recently opened, ushering in a new era of live entertainment in Adelaide. This vibrant venue, lovingly crafted by a group of big and down-to-earth personalities, is a venue created to support Adelaide talent and patrons alike.
Nestled in the heart of the Adelaide CBD, Velvet Underground is the brainchild of Sam Stoios, Annie Medlen, Sam Brittin and Darren Brown, who all shared a vision of creating a supportive venue where local talent can shine. The space exudes a polished, grunge vibe, reflecting the unique personalities behind its creation.
“We wanted to build more than just a venue; we wanted to build a community,” says Annie Medlen; one of the co-founders behind Velvet Underground.
“Our goal with Velvet Underground is to provide a platform for artists to showcase their talent and for audiences to engage with and enjoy a diverse range of performances. Adelaide deserves more live entertainment spaces, and we’re proud to contribute to the city’s vibrant arts scene.”
Renovations were a labour of love, with both Sams and Annie, rolling up their sleeves alongside incredible friends and family to bring Velvet Underground to life. Local Adelaide artist, Hari Hari, lent his talent to create stunning murals that adorn the venue, adding a unique touch of local artistry to the space.
“At Velvet Underground, we’re all about supporting the arts and showcasing local talent,” says Sam Stoios. “But we’re also passionate about beverages that bring people together. Our beverage list is a reflection of our love for unique, funky small-batch wines that appeal to all walks of life.”
You will find a treasure trove of 20 ever-changing wines, highlighting local favourites and hidden gems. Additionally, the cocktail list is a nod to Annie’s legendary hospitality friends, who each created a cocktail showcased on the menu.
Velvet Underground is not just about the drinks and the stage, it’s also about creating an inclusive, welcoming space for everyone. The venue features a games room with a full-sized pool table, classic arcade game Buck Hunter, and darts; providing even more entertainment for guests to enjoy.
“This is a place for everyone to come together and be part of our growing community of artists, performers, and entertainment enthusiasts,” says Sam Brittain.
Velvet Underground is located at 107 King William Street, Adelaide and is open every day until late.
