The creative and colourful Lassù will turn heads this Adelaide Fringe Festival, a circus cabaret where nothing is impossible.
Lassù is the electrifying collaboration between seventh-generation circus performer, Merrik Ashton (Infamous,
Adelaide Fringe Festival 2024-2026) and Creative Director, Mitchell Woodcock.
It’s a wild ride; a cosmic cabaret balancing gravity-defying circus acts and tongue-in-cheek adult humour.
Merrik, who grew up performing in his family’s show Circus Joseph Ashton, says the adventurous story allowed for creativity with no bounds.
“Lassù centres on the main character Rusty, who is on a mission to find the golden lasso after a cosmic explosion,”
says Merrick. “With Mitchell we were able to bring something out of this world to life.”
“I approached Mitchell, whose work as choreographer and creative director for events is the best in the business, and it all happened very quickly.”
An out-there idea allowed freedom for imagination to roam. Concepts of space countries fused with Western themes came together in a quick draft, and the production was ready for performance within six months.
Mitchell has worked with artists like Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora and Meghan Trainor, and is no stranger to big events having led the likes of a FIFA World Cup Closing Ceremony.
Dynamism is entrenched in Mitchell’s style. His choreography work led to the launch of Newground Collective in 2017, which lists a vast portfolio of big-name clients including The Aria Awards, The Australian Open and World Pride.
He and Merrik bring sophistication to Lassù, intertwining story with substance in acts ranging from knife-throwing to crossbow shooting, aerial acrobatics and a performer suspended from a topknot in her hair above the audience.
Lassù premieres at the Adelaide Fringe Festival on Thursday, 19th February, running all season until Sunday, 22nd March.
