Fringe review – Whack Job, A True Horror About Real Estate

At the beginning of this show Jodie J Hill asks us to lower our standards, but there is no need as she brings top tier comedy from the outset. Over the next 45 minutes Hill takes us though her journey from comedian entertaining the troops, to real estate agent cold calling potential clients, sharing behind the scenes secrets and stories from the other side of the auction block.

Whether as a tenant, buyer, or seller, nearly everyone has a real estate horror story and it is almost therapeutic to hear Hill reveal the good, the bad and ugly of the industry with self-awareness and a level of joy which is almost superhuman when considering some of the stories she has to tell.

Watching this show feels like catching up with an old friend as she spills the tea about her job. The fact that the job is one we love to hate just makes it all the more tantalising. You don’t need to be a property tragic to enjoy this show, anyone who’s had even the briefest brush with the sector will be able to relate and will likely be left wondering how Hill has managed to hold on to her sense of humour. Thankfully she has, and this warm and hilarious show is proof.

Hill delivers such a fun performance that it is easy to miss that this isn’t actually a true horror about real estate at all.  It’s a true story about a woman who has found herself starting over in a new career and managed to build something she’s proud of despite the (sometimes literal) s*** she found along the way.

It’s almost, almost enough to make you start liking estate agents.

5 stars baby!
