A Mother’s Day tradition with a difference: three generations wrapping gifts for a good cause.
When Tanya Siebert first spotted Minda’s gift wrapping fundraiser six years ago, she had no idea it would become a treasured family tradition. Now, every Mother’s Day and Christmas, three generations of her family – mum Anne, 12-year-old daughter Freya and 10-year-old son Daniel – wrap gifts for shoppers to raise vital funds for South Australians living with intellectual disability.
Tanya loved her experience volunteering and convinced her mum, Anne, to join her. What made this even more meaningful was that Anne had worked as a carer at Minda Home for eight years before going on to become a nurse.
For them both there is no better way to spend Mother’s Day than with each other, meeting new people, wrapping gifts and giving back to the community. “It’s become more special now doing it together and is something we look forward to every year,” says Tanya. “My mum will always make time, even as she finds it more difficult to stand for long periods. She doesn’t let it stop her from helping others which is really admirable. And my daughter, despite being only 12, has incredible skills in peaking to people and making them feel comfortable.” Tanya’s son and father have also joined the tradition in recent years, making it a whole family-affair.
“You get a lot more out of it than you put in,” says Anne. “It’s a great way to spend time together as a family away from distractions. You meet interesting people from all walks of life. We have real conversations and joke around together, it’s a really special time you can’t get anywhere else. It’s wonderful to see people’s generosity
and kindness, as many give more than we ask.”
The family will be wrapping gifts for this Mother’s Day at Minda’s gift-wrapping station in the Adelaide Arcade. Shoppers can have their gifts wrapped up for a small donation ($4 = one gift, or $10 = three gifts), with all proceeds supporting Minda and people with intellectual disability.
The wrapping station is open:
Friday 8 May, 10am-6pm
Saturday 9 May, 10am-5pm
