Adelaide based producers have launched a new video series that interviews and showcases established and emerging musicians over a shared meal of pasta at the Crown and Anchor’s Midnight Spaghetti.
For season one, host Adrian Szabo interviews six Adelaide bands. The series combines comedy and music to introduce audiences to musicians in the familiar environment of a shared meal.
Producer Connor Jolly says “The bands have been really keen to get involved because currently there aren’t many opportunities to play a gig or showcase work in a fun way. Gigs can be fun and silly, the show lets the musicians do this and combine their work with a more personal connection with audiences”.
At the heart of the series is a focus on community and connection. The shared process of eating a meal establishes an environment that is relaxed and uncomplicated and allows audiences to connect with artists the way they might connect with a friend. Family even plays a role in the show; Szabo’s Nonna is a recurring guest on the show, sharing her response to music and talking about food and her life. Ricky’s Albeck’s mum, country singer Becky Cole makes a surprise appearance to share her response to her son’s work and some stories of Ricky as a child.
**Inspired by the idea that musicians are often expected to play for free, the show explores how much we value the work that creatives put into art. Providing meals of pasta, The Crown and Anchor’s Midnight Spaghetti is the perfect partner. The Crown and Anchor seized the opportunity to use their gig space to support Adelaide talent in a way that suits the current distancing requirements. James Fenby from the Crown and Anchor says: “The Crown and Anchor are huge supporters of live music and the local scene. Even with current loosened restrictions it’s hard for us to run our band room due to its size and complexity. Songs for Pasta is a great project for us to work with because it’s one of the ways we can help bands beyond live shows”
The team released a pilot episode on world pasta day featuring Triple J Unearthed favourite, Bermuda Bay. Season one launches November 8 with the first episode starring Ricky Albeck and the Belair Line Band. Season one will also feature Adelaide bands: Siberian Tiger, Slow Mango, Oscar the Wild and Horror my Friend.
