Review: AJ Holmes: Yeah, But Not Right Now

AJ Holmes: Yeah, But Not Right Now ★★★★ 1/2

American actor, writer & composer AJ Holmes has brought his 1 man solo show to #Adelaide for his Australian Fringe debut, & boy is it musical storytelling at its finest!

Holmes is probably best known for his role as Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon, which he played on Broadway, the West End & in Melbourne and Sydney. Armed with just a keyboard, guitar, loop pedal & his amazing voice you are in store for an hour of musical comedy genius!

Holmes starts at the very beginning, & tells us much about his life growing up & making it big in the business. We hear of his relationship struggles & going from being a theatre nerd, unable to catch much attention from the ladies, to a big Broadway star & becoming a complete f*** boy!

Holmes’ musical skill is apparent, he is able to move flawlessly from keyboard to guitar & percussion. Couple all this with his rich vocals & you can see why Holmes has had such a successful musical theatre career.

Just when you think that the show has reached its pinnacle, like any good Broadway musical it must finish with a bang. Holmes ends with a motivational number that will leave you never being able to look at going to the toilet the same again! Getting the whole crowd involved, almost like a scene from Hillsong Church, but singing about bowel movements has never felt so inspiring!

Yeah, But Not Right Now is full of amazing comedic musicals numbers, but also shows a lot of heart & self-reflection with many of Holmes’ biographic stories. Holmes will have you in tears of laughter & still singing his songs well after walking out of the show!
