Review: Completely Improvised Shakespeare

Melbourne-based theatre company, Soothplayers, have come to the Adelaide Fringe to entertain and impress audiences with their performance of Completely Improvised Shakespeare.

Each night is a different show, with the audience choosing what play they would like to see, and the Soothplayers making it up on the spot. The plays are performed in Shakespearean-style, and utilise the themes of tragedy, comedy, history, romance, and fantasy.

We were lucky enough to see the opening and closing night of The Fishmongers Left Foot. This play followed the story of two star-crossed lovers from feuding families of fishmongers, and the tragedy which befalls them in the form of a curse.

All cast members bring their characters to life with impressive accents and hilarious voices, as well as movements and actions which bring a unique personality to each character. Each member of the cast throws themselves into whatever character is needed for the scene, and have no shame in who they are portraying.

The performance doesnt utilise many sound effects or props, but what they do have they use to enhance their characters to the fullest extent and bring the world theyre inventing to life. Through their completely improvised dialogue, they can bring the audience into a whole new world effortlessly.

The passion and enjoyment demonstrated from Soothplayers as they perform is what really makes their shows unforgettable, and they portray pure talent in the way they can invent a story and make it come to life right before your eyes.

Soothplayers only have one show left of their Completely Improvised Shakespeare so be sure to grab your friends and head into Gluttony to enjoy a hilarious night of Shakespearean-style speech and brilliant acting, and see what play youll be lucky enough to witness!
