With no formal architectural training, Port Adelaide-born architect Chris A. Smith rapidly established himself, before the age of thirty, as South Australia’s leading architect of theatres and civic buildings. Smith produced a vast body of work between 1914 and 1942, including more than forty picture theatres and town halls. Many are now listed in the South Australian Heritage Register, including the Capri Theatre. This talk by Chris Burns, drawing on new research, traces Smith’s career, examines his works and introduces some of his many collaborators.
