For one afternoon, Floods of Fire will take over the University of Adelaide campus with music, stories and art in a fun-filled free event for young and old.
In Floods of Fire, students and alumni of the Elder Conservatory of Music will populate these spaces presenting short artistic interventions responding to the Floods of Fire theme.
Artistic interventions will include songs, theatre, dance, creative writing, storytelling, workshops and artistic surprises. Move freely through the campus to experience this myriad of voices, stories and experiences.
Composer | Title | Description |
Budel, Jesse | Whispers | Classical students will perform a piece for string quartet in the style of a natural soundscape (bird calls) called Whispers. It is an encapsulation of the vocalisation of endangered species in South Australia, marking their discovery and decline since the founding of the colony in 1836 to the present day and beyond. This piece was commissioned by Chamber Music Adelaide and MOD as part of their 2022 Invisibility Commissions. Extinction Rebellion will also stage a small theatre component representing the extinction of the represented animals. |
Ferguson, Mark | Live and Die with the Butterflies | A continuation of a series of works by Mark Ferguson inspired by a quote from Barnaby Joyce complaining about environmental groups ‘getting in the way of progress’: “If you’re going to live with the butterflies, you’re going to die with the butterflies.” This item is the premiere of a new work on themes provided by University of Adelaide climate scientists. Scientists will also build simulations of alternative climate scenarios to be projected over the group and accompany the music. |
Page, Adam | Title TBC | An improvisation-based work by Adam Page, developed and performed in conjunction with UoA ecologists. |
Walker, Laurence & La Barbera, Ryann | Seagrass Immersion / Charcoal Fire | Two sonic arts students and two scientists with a background in acoustic ecology have developed an interactive soundscape based on field recordings of seagrass. This will alternate with another installation based on the effects of fire. |
Quixley, Oliver; Donovan, Scarlett; Johnston, Grace; McCombe, Hamish | TBC | A popular music student group will perform an original work based on the effect climate change is having on monogamous relationships in albatross populations. |
