From Victor Hugo to Byzantine pottery\, the history of cobalt\, and the emotional force of music and song lyrics\, join us for an artist talk that celebrates learning from the academic\, the everyday and everything in between. \n——————–\nFree\, no bookings required\n——————– \nGERRY WEDD (born 1957) is one Australia’s most celebrated ceramicists. Having studying jewellery\, painting\, and drawing\, Wedd obtained a Masters in Fine Art from the University of South Australia in 2005. Early on in his career\, Wedd became a graphic artist for quintessential Australian design company Mambo\, where he continued to design for them until 2006. Wedd has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally\, including Havana Bienal\, JamFactory\, Ian Potter Museum of Art and Victoria and Albert Museum. He has received numerous awards including the Hobart Art Prize in 2010 and the 1998 Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award and is represented in public collections around the country including the Art Gallery of South Australia\, Powerhouse Museum – Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences\, National Gallery of Australia\, National Gallery of Victoria\, Shepparton Art Museum and Queensland University of Technology.

DESCRIPTION:Individuals who are nonverbal or have limited speech need a communication system they can start using right now. If you work in special education or have a child with a diagnosis you’ve probably heard of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It’s well-known because it’s an evidence-based practice and when implemented with fidelity\, it works! PECS provides an immediately useful method for requesting things\, actions and people\, in a way that requires and promotes social interaction. Using the principles of applied behaviour analysis\, PECS starts by teaching spontaneous requesting and as quickly as possible\, moves on to responding to questions as well as commenting about things in the environment. An added attraction for preschool children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech after the introduction of PECS. However\, it’s never too late to start PECS; excellent progress has been made with people who were taught PECS as adults. It’s also important to note that while PECS was initially developed for young children with autism\, it has been used successfully with a variety of learners of all ages who have various cognitive\, physical and communication challenges. \nWith our training courses\, you will learn to implement PECS – the evidence-based\, AAC system of choice for people with autism worldwide.
