SUMMARY:Great Southern Half Marathon & 10K
DESCRIPTION:21.1K starts @ 9:30 am\n10K starts @ 9:35 am\nFree kids 1500m beach race starts @ 11:30 am (register on the day) \n2018 will see the 3rd running of the Great Southern Half Marathon and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before. This is a low cost event over a stunning & varied course around Aldinga Bay\, South Australia where runner experience is our absolute priority. \nThe course takes in sections of scrub\, wetlands\, beach\, esplanade & quiet back roads. Following runners’ feedback we have some exciting course changes with a new start/finish area\, more trails and less beach and will be running it in the opposite direction. The course will be well marked & marshalled and there will be water stations along the way. \nHigh tide is at 6:00 am\, so once again we will have a nice social 9:30 race start. There is a strict 3 hour cut off (8:30 per km) to be fair to our amazing volunteers who man the course for your enjoyment. \nEarly bird entries are now open – just $15 for the 10K & $25 for the half marathon.

SUMMARY:Adelaide 6/12/24 2018
DESCRIPTION:he tenth edition of this annual multi-hour Adelaide running festival will be held over the weekend of July 14-15. \nThe 6 Hour turns 10 this year (the 12 Hour and 24 Hour nine and eight years respectively) so we will be celebrating the only way we know how: to tread the same 2200m loop that has seen many great individual performances since 2009\, as well as dozens of individual struggles fought. These struggles haven’t always been won\, but everyone has come out the other side a more learned runner or walker for it. \nThis year we also have the honour of being the Australian 24 Hour Championships\, so we look forward to welcoming those who want to competitively pit themselves against the clock. The Kouros Cup awaits the victors. \nAnd amongst all the goings on\, we will have three gentleman who have attended each of these events over the past ten years. Rest assured their achievements won’t go uncelebrated! \nSo if this will be your first time or your tenth time\, we welcome fast and slow\, young and old\, left of centre and off the charts. It’s a great weekend out and one of the very few events where you get to choose where your finish line is.

SUMMARY:Aboriginal Skies (Booked out!)
DESCRIPTION:The Adelaide Planetarium at the University of South Australia in conjunction with NAIDOC Week presents \nPaul Curnow\nAdelaide Planetarium\nUniversity of South Australia \nAbstract: Aboriginal Australians have been looking at the night sky for thousands of years. During this time they have been able to build up a complex knowledge of the stars and their movements. Come and learn how to find the different constellations (stellar patterns) as seen by indigenous groups throughout Australia. Hear about the Dreaming stories that relate to the night sky\, and learn about how constellations like the Southern Cross and Orion are seen by Aboriginal Australians. The evening is strictly designed for the adult beginner\, with little or no astronomical knowledge who would like to know more about the night sky and the constellations\, as seen by the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia. (Note: children below the age of 16-years not permitted). \nBio: Paul Curnow [B.ED] has been a lecturer at the Adelaide Planetarium since 1992. He was the recipient of the ASSA editor’s award for 2000; 2010; and then again in 2013. In 2002\, he served as a southern sky specialist for visiting U.S. and British astronomers who were in Australia for the total solar eclipse. After 27-years of research\, he is regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on Australian Aboriginal night sky knowledge; and in 2004\, he worked in conjunction with the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center Planetarium in Ohio\, on the creation of a show that features Indigenous Australian stories of the night sky. In addition\, Paul runs a number of popular courses for the general public that focus on the constellations\, planetary astronomy\, historical astronomy and ethnoastronomy\, which primarily deals with how the night sky is seen by non-western cultures. He appeared as the keynote speaker at the inaugural 2010 Lake Tyrrell Star Party in Sea Lake\, Victoria and in 2011 was a special guest speaker at the Carter Observatory in Wellington\, New Zealand. Since 2012 Paul has taken the role of Lecturer for the Astronomy & Universe course (EDUC2066) for the School of Education at the University of South Australia. In 2018\, he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Astronomical Society of South Australia for his contributions to astronomy. Paul appears regularly in the media and has authored over 50 articles on astronomy. \nTo be held at the Adelaide Planetarium (upstairs)\, Building P\, University of South Australia\, Mawson Lakes Campus. Mawson Lakes Boulevard\, Mawson Lakes SA 5095. \nBOOKINGS ESSENTIAL. Cost $35.00 per person. SUMMARY:Film Night: Bag It
DESCRIPTION:Join the Adelaide Sustainability Centre during July as we take part in Plastic Free July. We’ll be providing tips and tricks on how to live a less plastic life. \nIs your life too plastic? \nAustralians dump 7\,150 recyclable plastic bags into landfills every minute or 429\,000 bags every hour (Clean Up Australia). Every day single-use disposable bags are mindlessly thrown away. But where is “away”? Where do the bags and other plastics end up\, and at what cost to our environment\, marine life and human health? \nBag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. Jeb is not a radical environmentalist\, but an average American who decides to take a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics. Jeb’s journey in this documentary film starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society—from baby bottles\, to sports equipment\, to dental sealants\, to personal care products—is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb’s journey takes a personal twist\, we see how our crazy-for plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now. \nCome along for an evening of shared food and conversation\, a panel discussion around our local plastics issues\, followed by a screening of ‘Bag It!’ \n6 pm – Potluck community dinner\, please bring a plate of food to share* \n6.45 pm – Panel Discussion: Jarvis Webb – Rawtec\, Ali Roush and Jo Hendrikx – KESAB\, + one more TBC. \n7.15 pm – Film Screening. \nThe Adelaide Sustainability Centre is supported by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Boardand ConservationSA. You’ll find us at The Joinery\, 111 Franklin Street\, Adelaide. \n* Choose to refuse single-use plastic. During our dinners we provide real plates and cutlery\, provide reusable cups\, supply filtered water and collect food scraps to give to The Joinery’s chickens or put in our compost bins. Please avoid bringing single-use plastics\, including glad wrap\, to our dinners if you can. We look forward to seeing you! \nhttp://www.bagitmovie.com/ \nhttp://www.kesab.asn.au/
