The Mystic Dr. Drake live radio plays takes us back to the golden age of radio with a twist. You’ll be transported to the 1940’s with live sound effects, a pianist and actors in costumes from the era. Eight actors perform a three-part series written by local writers Warren McKenzie and Carli Stasinopoulos. Two operators create live sounds effects just like in the movies. Feet walking, a door slamming or a villain being punched, all is performed live on stage with a foley sound effect team.
The three episodes delve into the mysterious world of Dr. Marcus Drake and his assistant, News reporter Lois Hanley. In a similar theme to the popular 1930’s The Shadow series, Dr. Drake is a successful child surgeon by day and a wielder of the mystic arts crime fighter by night. Dr. Marcus Drake has been trained in the mystic arts by the mysterious Ancient ones and with the assistance of Lois Hanley continues to fight evil in all its facets.
Episode One:
Dr. Drake is on his way to a meeting of the College of Surgeons to fight against implementing a new surgical procedure, lobotomies. On his way he encounters a stranger being pursued by villains. He helps the stranger, only to find out he is an Emissary from “The Mystic Ones” with an offer for Dr. Marcus Drake, to become a Paladin of Light. In the meantime, the dark disciples enlist gangsters Frank “The Shark” Romano and his evil mother Arsenic Agatha to assist them in stopping Dr. Drake. They say a mother’s love for her son is never-ending, but not with this family, will they succeed in stopping Dr. Drake?
Episode Two:
Dr Drake is invited to a lecture hall by pharmacologist Dr. Ophidian. Coincidentally, Lois is invited to the same location to cover a story. It is revealed that Dr. Ophidian has been an admirer of Lois for sometime. He strikes up a conversation with Dr. Drake and secretly poisons him. Lois finds herself a victim of the infatuated Dr. Ophidian, who is not only a pharmacologist, but also an alchemist and an aromacologist. Lois resists Ophidian’s advances, who decides to kidnap her. Will Lois escape Dr. Ophidian’s spell?
Episode Three:
Lois Hanley is covering a local theatre’s opening and the groups rendition of “Pirates of Penzance”. There she meets the nervous Matson Hassinger, the accountant and nephew of owner Walter Hassinger, his femme fatale girlfriend, knockout Lucy Lewis, divas Camille and Arthur and director Butch Jones. She is informed that Butch thinks the lighting operator has cursed the show by saying the Shakespearian play that starts with an M inside the theatre! Ghostly apparitions, blood oozing from the walls and strange noise and bumps all add to the belief. Lois and Drake are invited to the show on opening night but before the show can begin, the understudies are murdered! Will Dr. Drake solve the crime?
