Help Pack Meals For Those In Need!
Zambrero – Australia’s largest Mexican restaurant group with over 240 restaurants globally spanning Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, United States and United Kingdom – has teamed up with international hunger relief agency, Rise Against Hunger, for their annual special event to pack over 430,000 meals to go to those in need in Timor-Leste.
It is all part of the Zambrero mission of ending world hunger, because at Zambrero for every meal sold, a meal is donated to someone in need.
So far, this mission has seen Zambrero donate over 60 million meals to those in need, both here in Australia and overseas, in partnership with food relief charities.
What does a meal packing day look like? Plate 4 Plate Day is full of feel good vibes! The day is held every year, in five states around Australia. At the meal packing day you’ll pack meals that are a combination of nutritional rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables, all fortified with a vitamin mix specifically designed to supplement the diet of anyone experiencing malnutrition. On the day, you’ll be shown what to do – we promise it’s easy and fun – and for only a couple hours of your time you’ll be packing meals for people who really need it, all we need is you!
Why are the meals going to Timor-Leste? Despite reductions in hunger over the past decade, Timor-Leste still has some of the highest rates of malnutrition and stunting in Asia. More than 41% of the population lives on less than $1.54 USD ($2.40 AUD) per day, which limits people’s ability to eat sufficient nutritious food. The 2021 Global Hunger Index rated hunger levels in the country as “serious.”
Rise Against Hunger partners with local organisations to address food insecurity, especially among youth, in the country. Since 2015, more than 3.4 million Rise Against Hunger meals have been distributed in Timor-Leste to provide people facing hunger with access to improved nutrition. Rise Against Hunger meals are provided to youth at technical high schools, boarding schools, orphanages, youth centers and theological schools.
This means most of the meals you pack at the Plate 4 Plate Day are donated through school feeding programs, so not only are children receiving a meal they are in school receiving an education too.
If you are looking to give back to the community, meet like-minded people, do something that will help others and make you feel good, then come and volunteer with us! Individuals, businesses, community groups, schools and sporting teams are all welcome to join the day.
In addition to the meal packing events, Zambrero will also be offering double donations in-restaurants, via Zam App pick-up orders and via delivery on the day. For every burrito, bowl and retail product purchased at Zambrero on Wednesday 19 October, an extra meal will be donated to someone in need.
