Interview with Zach and Viggo with Sarah Elding
28 February 2017
After a highly acclaimed season in Edinburgh, comedy duo Zach and Viggo are here for the Adelaide Fringe 2017.
We sat down with them (via email, a publicist and a few inbetweeners) and tried to make some sense of their hectic and very funny madness…
The Adelaide Fringe is a significant draw card for international performers – what attracts you to this event?
Adelaide is great for international performers because it’s a hub for artists from all over the world. It’s big enough to draw acts from all styles of performance, and small enough for us to get to know each other and become lifelong friends.
What can we expect from your Adelaide Fringe 2017 show?
At 7:00pm the show will start and it will end around 7:45-8:00pm depending on how well it’s going.
You are quite esteemed comedians – how do you continue to produce fresh and original material?
We’ve still got ways to go but staying busy forces us to constantly be creating. You can get burnt out from doing too much at once, but the key to producing fresh material is making sure you’re having fun. Because if you’re not having fun, chances are we aren’t enjoying it. We love traveling the world and making people laugh so we’ll continue doing it for as long as it makes us happy.
Where do you draw your inspirations?
We’re deeply influenced by athletes and artists who push the boundaries of their genres and change the game by redefining what it means to be whatever it is they’re categorised as. Artists such as Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Dr. Brown, Eric Andre and Sam Campbell are all sensational performers because they’re constantly advancing their respective art forms by doing what they want and proving that it works.
You have been likened to great comic performances – such as Monty Python – how do you feel about this?
We really want to see his show but we’re on at the same time.
Do you try and pitch your material to a specific audience – or is it a broader audience?
Our show is very funny and everybody likes it.
To date, has the Adelaide Fringe 2017 lived up to your expectations?
Adelaide Fringe 2017 has been a dream scenario for us. We received great reviews on opening weekend, won the Weekly Award for Best Comedy and have been selling out both our duo and solo shows. We also got to be a part of the craziest Fringe Club performance in Adelaide history that included Betty Grumble, Demi Lardner, Double Denim and international superstar Reuben Kaye.
What is the one event that you (both) want to see at Adelaide Fringe 2017?
Tom Walker: Bee Boo. Have you seen him on Whose Line? Australia his ad-libs are off the chain!
Zach and Viggo’s THUNDERFLOP is on nightly from 7pm in Campanile in the Garden of Unearthly Delights
