Review: Assassins ★★★★1/2

The latest production to hit Stirling Community Theatre, Assassins explores the continuous cycle of disillusioned people striving for purpose and recognition in America by assassinating, or at least trying to assassinate, the president.

The production delves into the lives of prominent assassins such as John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald through comedic one-liners and humorous lyrics, which juxtapose against the dark, political themes and the despair of the characters.

The fragmented mosaic of stories come together through the Balladeer and the Proprietor, who appear throughout the production orientating the audience, expressing opposing ideas, and rousing the assassins into action.

All cast members bring their characters to life with impressive accents as well as movements and actions which bring a unique personality to each character. Small details in how the characters hold themselves or the gestures they make brings a noticeable sensation of realness to the production and intrigues the audience.

The music flows effortlessly throughout the production, and works to seamlessly complement and enhance the incredible voices of the cast in their journey with Sondheim’s music.

The simple, yet effective set allows the performers to shine as they aren’t overshadowed by props, and lighting is used to enhance the story and bring the on-stage world to life.

It is hard to believe that Assassins is an amateur theatre production with the passionate and impressive acting abilities of the cast, the brilliant use of a small and simple set, and a clear determination which has payed off in a production that is engaging and enjoyable.

Assassins will be playing at the Stirling Community Theatre until the 23rd of November, so be sure to secure your tickets to this original, entertaining, and eye-opening performance before it’s too late!
