Fresh Science SA

Drinks, food, fireworks and science. Come and watch as our fresh, young scientists present their work at a pub event with a difference.

The ten young scientists will describe their scientific discoveries in the time it takes a party sparkler to burn out.

Over one hundred early-career scientists around Australia nominated for Fresh Science 2018. You’ll be meeting the ten selected for Fresh Science SA. They’ll tell us about their discoveries and you’ll have the chance to ask them more.

Join us as SA’s freshest young scientists strut their stuff in the fun environment of The Elephant British Pub, Adelaide. Tickets are free but bookings are essential. Meals and drinks available at pub prices.

Fresh Science is a national competition that helps early-career researchers share their stories of discovery and gain national media coverage for their work.

The coup and the struggle for democratisation in Zimbabwe: Challenges, Prospects and Lessons

It’s been four months since one of the world’s longest-serving dictators was forced out of power. Robert Mugabe dramatically left office in what was essentially a military coup albeit couched in popular protests. The unique political ‘transition’ that happened in Zimbabwe offers a great opportunity to re-look into the democratisation debate in Africa. This talk discusses the challenges, prospects, and lessons for Zimbabwe’s democratisation in the context of the November coup.

Edson Ziso is a Visiting Research Fellow, in the Dept. of Politics & International Studies, School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts at the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on Australia-Africa and China-Africa relations, South-South cooperation, global governance and Zimbabwean politics. Ziso recently completed his PhD in Politics at the University of Adelaide.

Think Global is a monthly series of public talks, conversations, and dialogues, with a focus on contemporary politics and international relations. The Centre of Democracy has partnered with three of South Australia’s leading universities to share new research and engage with current political debate.

Mr Craig Reucassel

Mr Craig Reucassel is an Australian writer and comedian who is best known for his work on ABC’s The Chaser and is currently in the latest Chaser’s Hamster Wheel on the ABC. For two years Reucassel co-hosted the drive-time radio show Today Today on Triple J with fellow Chaser Chris Taylor. The pair returned with their Sunday afternoon show Bloody Sunday to do relief shifts for the following two years. Reucassel is presently a Patron of the Left Right Think-Tank, Australia’s first independent and non-partisan youth think-tank.Mr Craig Reucassel appears by arrangement with Claxton Speakers International.

Stacey Thomson – ‘Ranger Stacey’

Stacey Thomson, better known as “Ranger Stacey” started out as a National Parks and Wildlife ranger in Queensland. Stacey has appeared on Australian TV for more than 20 years. Most of us know her from the Logie award winning ‘Agro’s Cartoon Connection’ and Network Ten’s ‘Totally Wild’. We’re super excited to have Stacey as a speaker for next year’s World Environment Fair! ‘Ranger Stacey Thomson’ appears by arrangement with Claxton Speakers International.
