A Little Night Music

Join the G&S Society for A Little Night Music

Audiences will be taken for “A Weekend in the Country” when A Little Night Music, returns in an all-new production for The G&S Society at the Arts Theatre in April/May.

Stephen Sondheim creates a stunning tour de force when he takes Ingmar Bergman’s comedy of manners, Smiles of a Summer Night, and turns it into a musical of masterful execution and elegance. Winner of four Tony Awards, this is a musical work that has forever entranced the world of theatre.

Set in 1900 Sweden, A Little Night Music explores the tangled web of affairs centred around actress, Desiree Armfeldt (Bronwen James), and the men who love her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik Egerman (Robin Schmelzkopf) and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm (Nicholas Bishop). When the travelling actress performs in Fredrik’s town, the estranged lovers’ passion rekindles. This strikes a flurry of jealousy and suspicion between Desiree; Fredrik; Fredrick’s wife, Anne (Emilene Whitehead); Desiree’s current lover, the Count; and the Count’s wife, Charlotte (Deborah Caddy). Not to mention Fredrik’s son Henrik (William Richards), who is in love with Anne.

Both men – as well as their jealous wives and Henrik – agree to join Desiree and her family for a weekend in the country at Desiree’s mother’s estate. With everyone in one place, infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring endless surprises.

“I simply adore this show” says director Pam O’Grady, who has herself played Desiree, “I love working with Ric Trevaskis (Associate Director) and Christine Hodgen (Musical Director) to bring the production to life.”

A Little Night Music is full of hilariously witty and heartbreakingly moving moments of adoration, regret and desire, and contains Sondheim’s popular song, the haunting “Send in the Clowns.”

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC runs in a limited season of just 10 performances at The Arts Theatre, 53 Angas St Adelaide, from April 26 to May 5.
