The inaugural Women’s Sport Season has kicked off in South Australia – an initiative celebrating women’s sports and the talented athletes who participate.
From January to March 2020, South Australia will see an unprecedented number of professional women’s sporting events, including the Adelaide International tennis tournament, Women’s Tour Down Under and ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Golf Open.
Presented by the South Australian Government, the Women’s Sport Season campaign aims to further the development and promotion of women’s sports.
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Corey Wingard says, “South Australia boasts some fantastic home-grown female sporting talent and it’s great to be welcoming other world-class female athletes to our great state.
Women’s Sport Season will showcase some of the world’s best athletes across multiple sports with tennis world No.1 Ash Barty and Hannah Green, winner of the most prestigious award in Australian golf, the Greg Norman Medal in 2019, coming to town.
“The 2020 season of women’s sporting events will inspire the next generation… You can’t be what you can’t see – but for the next few months there’ll be plenty of inspirational sporting role models on show so I encourage everyone to get involved and get to as many events as possible,” says Minister Wingard.
Chief Executive for the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, Kylie Taylor, says “Sport has an incredible opportunity to change attitudes where women are seen and recognised as elite, professional athletes, coaches, administrators and board members.”
“We are hoping to see all games sold out and that every young girl or boy can see their favourite player in action, or indeed, to find a new inspirational hero,” says Kylie Taylor.
Adelaide Lightning, Adelaide Crows, Adelaide United and the Scorpions will also be playing throughout the Women’s Sport Season.
