Karmele is the program director at IAR Indonesia overseeing their orangutan rescue, rehabilitation and release centre in Ketapang as well as their centre in Bogor focussing on Slow Loris.

BBBRNP is an incredible piece of primary forest encompassing over 200,000ha and supports an array of wildlife. This forest is part of what is known as the “Heart of Borneo”, Asia’s last great rainforest. This region provides vital habitat to 10 endemic species of primate, more than 350 birds, 150 reptiles and amphibians and 10,000 plant species.
But there’s a problem.
Sadly, it has been decades since the local communities in the Mentatai area of BBBRNP witnessed the last orangutan here, despite this region being prime orangutan habitat. Our partner, International Animal Rescue (IAR) in Indonesia conducted their own research and confirmed the locals observations.
