“Marvellous” – LIMELIGHT ★★★★★

This powerful new concert experience fully embraces circus, opera and classical music in two captivating new works by Australian composer Chloé Charody to help tell stories that must be heard.

LIMBO is a violin sonata written specifically for the unique acrobatic skill set of violin virtuoso Sonja Schebeck.

Sonja partners acrobat Josh Frazer in this ground-breaking interdisciplinary duet to tell a poignant narrative through dynamic partner acrobatics, duo unicycle and cyr wheel, completely embracing circus and classical music in one captivating world.

LIMBO is set at Melbourne Park Hotel in 2021, a time when many refugees were detained indefinitely, some having been incarcerated by the Australian Government for up to 9 years. If we think of what it was like to be stuck inside for several months due to the pandemic, imagine what it would feel like after 9 years.

The sonata roller coasts through emotions of anger, frustration, fantasy & escape, exploding with one of the greatest weapons against oppression: hope.

TRUTH IN THE CAGE is a new song cycle for acrobatic soprano based on the poetry collection of the same title by Manus Prison survivor, Mohmmad Ali Maleki.

Mohammad is an Iranian refugee who spent 10 years incarcerated at Manus Prison – a place run by the Australian Government to detain those who had come to Australia by boat to ask for sanctuary.

Whilst in this prison, Mohammad and his fellow inmates suffered terribly, and it was inside this prison where Mohammad wrote his poetry collection, ‘Truth in the Cage’.

Chloé has collaborated with Mohammad to bring 7 of these poems to life in a dynamic new song cycle, composed for the exceptional American acrobatic soprano Caitlin Redding.

“Composer Chloé Charody is remarkable not just for her genre-defying music or the gravity-defying nature of its performance – a combination of classical music, circus and opera – but for her commitment to highlighting the plight of refugees in her work.” – LIMELIGHT ★★★★★
