THE SUBURBS TAKE ON MAJOR PROJECT FOR ADELAIDE FRINGE: SLEEP’S HILL TUNNEL

Sleep’s Hill Tunnel is shaping up to be one of the most unique and must-see events at the Fringe in 2024. This one-of-a-kind immersive experience is set to captivate audiences by bringing to life a forgotten piece of Adelaide’s history. Located in Panorama, this exclusive event offers a rare opportunity to explore the abandoned Sleep’s Hill Tunnel, a hidden gem on the old Adelaide-to-Melbourne rail line that is now a heritage site.

Sleep’s Hill Tunnel promises an unforgettable journey through time. Visitors will be guided through the historic rail tunnel to discover a 350-metre long journey of light projections that chronicle the tunnel’s transformation from a steam train passageway to a mushroom farm. This exploration is enriched with unique time-lapse footage and phenomenal projection installations by various artists.

Videographer and photographer, Stephen Axford from Planet Fungi, renowned for his captivating photography and time-lapse videos, brings the tunnel’s fungal history to life. His enchanting imagery of fungi, featuring a kaleidoscope of colourful forest species, provides an intimate look into the world of these mysterious organisms. Through his artistic lens, the birth, decay, and intricate network of fungi are transformed into visual poetry, offering a mesmerising blend of art and science. Also featured in the tunnel is the installation, The World Beneath Our Feet, which transports audiences into the incredible world of life in the soil underground; this piece was a hit at The Barbican in London last year.

Director and CEO of Adelaide Fringe, Heather Croall said, “ It’s so exciting to see such an innovative project premiere in the Mitcham area at Fringe time. The Sleep’s Hill Tunnel show fuses history, art and technology in the most stunning way, it will be a memorable immersive experience for everyone… especially for those who are fans of tunnels, trains or mushrooms, which I think is almost everyone! This is one of many hundreds of magical shows happening in the suburbs at Fringe ‘24; we love seeing so many hidden, unique stories in our local neighbourhoods come to life across the whole State for Fringe and Sleeps Hill Tunnel is going to be one that people will not want to miss.”

Current owner and custodian of the Sleeps Hill Tunnel, Dave Munro said, “I’m looking forward to the Fringe bringing a new chapter to the second tunnel, it’s a remarkable state heritage asset and I can’t wait for people to experience this rare opportunity to embrace this very special place!”

Sleep’s Hill Tunnel began construction in 1879 and was used by steam trains until 1914 before heavier trains began to be used with a different rail gauge forcing the tunnel to be decommissioned. The tunnel went on to have many uses including the storing of state records and valuables as well as being used as a mushroom farm for its desirable climate and lack of light.

This project is a testament to Adelaide Fringe’s commitment to uncovering and celebrating local stories and places. Sleep’s Hill Tunnel is not just an event; it’s an exploration and a rediscovery of Adelaide’s unique history through the lens of contemporary art.
