Fringe Review – 27 Club ★★★★★

The legends of the ill-fated 27 Club may be long gone, but their music is still alive and well in this spectacular show that will have you rocking out in your seat – covid safe of course!

It’s been a bit of a dry spell for live entertainment in Australia as of recent times, but 27 Club brings you right back into the live music scene making you feel like you never truly left it.

So how does one become a member of this illustrious 27 club you might ask? Oh no biggie, rock folklore just tells us you just have to sell your soul to the devil in exchange for the witchcraft of rock! Seems like a fair trade, surely!?

There are so many members of the 27 club, and this show does their best to cover as much music as possible in the space of an hour – from Kurt Cobain to Janis Joplin, from Amy Winehouse to Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. It truly gives you a refresher course into how iconic and influential these musicians were.

The band is outstanding – we are even treated to some Jimi Hedrix-esque behind the head guitar solos! The audience is also spoilt for vocals with Sarah McLeod of The Superjesus, Kevin Mitchell of Jebadiah and Adelaide’s own Carla Lippis fronting.

In between the songs we also get some anecdotal insight into the members of the 27 club as told by fellow musicians, providing for an interesting history lesson into these tortured souls.

So start teasing that beehive, get on some tye-dye and fringe and get ready to kiss the sky with this explosive show celebrating the lives and music of some phenomenal musicians gone too soon.
