Review: No Frills Cabaret

Show Date: 06/03/2018
Rating: ✮✮✮✮
The Empyrean tent in Gluttony is one of my favourite performance venues to watch shows in! There always seems to be something magical and energetic about the performers, who put on a show that involves the best of circus and physical theatre. So, of course, I was looking forward to watching No Frills Cabaret and see the magic unfold with its diverse cast of performers.
Set up to be a form of a variety show, No Frills Cabaret is a solid 50 minute show that aims to present individuals from around Adelaide and Australia, who are highly skilled and trained in the performing arts and circus scenes. There’s no time wasted in providing a plot / storyline of any sort – this is basically a train of talent making their way to the stage and strutting their best skills in entertaining the audience!
Last night’s line-up presented with a fantastic blend of showstoppers – fire twirling, juggling, hula hooping, aerial acrobatics, magic, and full body strength that WOW-ed the audience members and attracted a great deal of applause per act. The soundtrack was perfectly selected to capture the essence of each act, which also contributed towards the electric atmosphere of the show.
There were also humorous moments that were craftily mixed into the show, which left us in the audience in stitches from the little but effective dose of narration to introduce the individuals as they graced the stage, as well as move the props around for the next act. The camaraderie between the performers, the cheekiness of the dad joke-style puns to introduce the next act, and the strange props that made each act stand out in its own way further delivered towards a fun, interactive, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Produced by Kiri Pedersen and featuring regular show stopping performances included pyro genius and acrobatic Chris Carlos, magician and illusionist Matt Casey, hula hoop extraordinaires Anna Fisher & Malia Walsh, acrobatic performers Lewie West, Ian Richardson, AJ Saltalamacchia, Jordan ‘Jobby’ O’Brien, & Amanda Lee, and juggler Odette Robbins, this show presented with talents that; while most circus and physical theatre shows would ideally have; still provided the audience with an invigorating feeling throughout the show. I could go into more detail about what each performer did, but wouldn’t it be much better if you visited and witnessed it yourself? I can guarantee you that you won’t be disappointed and will indeed feel a constant adrenaline rush throughout the show.
No Frills? No worries! If you’re a fan of shows that come without the unnecessary show fillers and are all about capturing your attention and providing entertainment non-stop for 50 minutes, then this is a show that you don’t want to miss this Adelaide Fringe season.
